Older students can still need practice with short vowels and digraphs. This week’s free reading is the first part of The Fish Shop: Beck needs to find a way to help his mom get her van running.
Download the complete free reading sample (PDF)
The seven-page file includes the 141-word passage The Van, a response page with a digraph hunt and four questions, a dictation sentence, teacher guidance and the answer key. It is the existing free sample from the Orthos store, unchanged.
Print just what students need: Pages 3–4 are the reading and response pages. Keep page 5 as your teacher key.
Before reading: Use this with students practicing one-syllable short-vowel words and sh, ch, th, wh and ck. Read the preview words at the top together, spending time on the ones the student does not know yet.
Read, then reread: Listen to the first read and help with unfamiliar spellings. After an accurate read, reread for smoother phrasing. Use the small reread boxes on page 3 to mark completed reads; a stopwatch is optional.
Finish with the response page: Students find three digraph words, answer the questions and write the dictated sentence from page 5. Read questions aloud when needed. The writing lines are already on the student page.
A note about the sample: The guide on page 2 describes the full step packs. Its references to tracker pages 26–27 and a step check refer to those full packs; they are not included in this seven-page free sample. You can use the passage and response page on their own.
If your students want to keep reading Beck’s story, the full Step 1 set is available on TPT.
